    GSSM’s Dr. Elaine Parshall Named NCSSS Teacher of the Year 

    HARTSVILLE, S.C. (Nov. 26, 2024) -?The South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics (GSSM) proudly announces that Dr. Elaine Parshall, an engineering instructor known for her innovative teaching and transformative mentorship, has been named the NCSSS Teacher of the Year by the National Consortium of Secondary STEM Schools (NCSSS).   

    Since joining GSSM in 2014, Dr. Parshall has made significant contributions to the school’s engineering and robotics programs, tripling student participation in these courses. Under her leadership, the GSSM robotics team has achieved outstanding success, including three state championships and a trip to the World Championships. In 2024 alone, 80 students—nearly 30% of the school’s population—applied to join the team. Dr. Parshall’s mentorship extends beyond the GSSM campus, as her students also mentor robotics teams across South Carolina, helping to build a robust STEM community statewide.   

    “Dr. Parshall’s innovative approach to teaching fosters resilience and critical thinking,” said Dr. Neval Erturk, Vice President of Academics at GSSM. “Her focus on hands-on learning and real-world applications ensures her students are not only prepared for academic success but also equipped to take on leadership roles in their future careers.”
